This play, A Tale of Two Cities, A Drama, in Two Acts and a Prologue by Tom Taylor, was first performed at the Lyceum Theatre, London, on Monday, January 30th, 1860.  It is the first dramatization of A Tale of Two Cities.  The play states that Charles Dickens “In the kindest manner, superintended the production of the piece.”  Mr. Villiers played Sydney Carton, Mr. Forrester Charles Darnay, and Kate Seville, Lucie Manette.  Madame Celeste, who managed the Lyceum Theatre,  had two roles: in the first act, as Colette Dubois; and in the second act, as the villainous Madame DeFarge.  Most critics praised the play as being faithful to the novel, and declared it a success.  However, others wrote that the play was too long and would probably be abridged.
