| This sketch in Frank Leslie’s Illustrated Newspaper for February 28th, 1885, is of a scene in the Dickens Carnival at Mechanics Hall, Boston on February 17th. The Dickens Carnival was organized by the Women’s Educational and Industrial Union of Boston. Over seven thousand tickets were sold. The entertainment consisted of tableaux vivants representing scenes from Dickens’s novels, followed by a procession of the characters in costume. The procession pictured here is from Barnaby Rudge. It includes Barnaby Rudge with his raven Grip, Gabriel Varden, Dolly Varden, and other characters from the tableau all parading before a participant posing as Charles Dickens seated at a table. |
